Thomas P. Benson, CPA, CFFA
Managing Director

Thomas P. Benson Tom has seventeen years of extensive and varied public accounting experience including twelve as a partner with Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro, PC from 1982 through 1994. He founded the Vineyard Group, LLC in 2004, after gaining ten years of valuable hands on experience in key operating positions with manufacturing firms, including acting as the President of a domestic business unit of a publicly traded Irish biotech company and the Executive Vice President/General Manager of a subsidiary of a Canadian public company that is a prime manufacturer of floor to ceiling movable wall systems. Tom was instrumental in the development, negotiation, and closing of the sale of these companies.

Tom's public accounting experience coupled with his direct manufacturing management experience combine to give him a keen understanding of what it really takes to be successful in today's business climate and the comprehensive skill set that is required to be able to help the Vineyard Group clients make positive and value added change. Tom is a results oriented creative problem solver and an excellent communicator and facilitator.

Tom is a 1975 graduate of Jamestown Community College and received its Distinguished Alumnus award in 1992. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in 1977 and became a Certified Public Accountant in New York State in 1979 and a Certified Forensic Financial Analyst in 2005. He is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts.

Scott D. Reed, CPA, CFDA

Scott D. Reed Scott D. Reed, CPA is a 1980 St. Bonaventure University graduate and has over twenty-four years experience in accounting. As a shareholder of the firm, Scott is Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro's Director of Quality Control and is partner-in-charge of the Olean office.

Scott specializes in accounting and audit engagements, commercial and governmental entities and non-profit organizations. In addition, Scott performs practice-monitoring (peer review) engagements for other CPA firms. He is professionally licensed in New York and Pennsylvania.

In addition to being a Certified Public Account, Scott is a Certified Fraud Deterrence Analyst as designated by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. As a CFDA, Scott has received specialized training in internal control systems and fraud deterrence techniques.

Scott's professional memberships include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a member of the New York and Pennsylvania Associations of School Business Officials. Scott is a past treasurer and past president of the Olean Exchange Club, being named Exchangite of the Year for 2002. He is also a past president and fundraiser for the Olean Area United Way, a past officer in the National Association of Accountants, and past treasurer on the board of directors of Cattaraugus County Council on the Arts. Scott is currently a member of the finance committee and parish council of the St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany, New York.

Michael D. Staley, CPA, CFE

Michael D. Staley A graduate of Ohio State University, Michael D. Staley, CPA is a manager in our audit and accounting department with 20 years experience as an accountant. Mike routinely performs audits of statutory and GAAP basis financial statements for manufacturing and insurance industry clients. Mike has significant involvement with insurance industry clients and assists them with resolving regulatory and competitive challenges.

Additionally, Mike prepares projections, corporate income tax returns, pension plan audits and review engagements. His scope of engagements also includes consolidations, various management consulting projects, and merger and acquisition support. Highlighting his expertise and extensive audit experience, Mike performs consulting projects to identify methods for business management to enhance efficiencies and internal controls.

Mike devotes a substantial amount of time to professional and civic activities. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He is a member of the finance committee for the Pennsylvania Land Title Association and the Industrial Management Council of Olean.

Mike is a member, past treasurer, and past member on the board of directors for the Kiwanis Club of Olean and a member on the board of directors and treasurer for the First Church of God. Additionally, he is a member of the board of directors and treasurer for the Genesis House of Olean, Inc. and a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

John F. Whipple, Jr., CPA, CVA

John F. Whipple, Jr. John F. Whipple, Jr., CPA is a shareholder of Buffamante Whipple Buttafaro, P.C. Jack is the Chief Executive Officer of the firm and also directs the firm's marketing committee.

Generally, Jack advises businesses and individuals on how to achieve their financial goals. Utilizing over twenty-five years experience, he specializes in advising businesses and their owners in structuring tax motivated transactions, financing and strategic planning. Jack consults on various business valuation and litigation support engagements, as well as buy-sell agreements, mergers and acquisitions.

Jack is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration - Accounting.

His professional memberships include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. Jack is the treasurer of the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation and president, director, and member of the Bartlett Country Club. Jack is a past member of the board of directors of the Mental Health Association in Cattaraugus County from 1983 to 1994.
